BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION: KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICE, AND INFLUENCING FACTORS AMONG WOMEN ATTENDING VINMEC TIMES CITY INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL IN 2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the knowledge and practice of breast self-examination (BSE) among women attending the Breast Center at Vinmec Times City International Hospital in 2025 and to analyze factors associated with their knowledge and practice of BSE. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data were collected from 281 women through structured questionnaires. Qualitative analysis was based on 10 semi-structured in-depth interviews, analyzed using conventional content analysis. Data were processed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: The study population was predominantly aged 30–39 (45.6%), followed by 40–49 years (23.1%). Most participants had at least a vocational or university-level education (71.9%), and the most common occupation was office work (43.4%). Healthcare workers were the primary source of BSE information for 63.3% of participants. Among 281 women, 95.4% (n=268) knew where to go for early breast cancer detection. While 50.2% had adequate knowledge of BSE, only 44.1% had ever performed it, and just 23.5% practiced it correctly. Women with higher education and less physically demanding jobs were significantly more likely to perform BSE correctly (OR = 3.64 and 3.18, respectively; p < 0.01). Notably, women with a family history of breast cancer were nearly 10 times more likely to perform BSE (OR = 9.7), indicating this as a strong motivating factor for screening behavior. Conclusion: There remains a clear gap between knowledge and actual BSE practice among women. Educational interventions should be designed to integrate practical skills training, address psychosocial barriers, and tailor content to specific target groups
