Abstract

Objectives: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and evaluate early outcomes of curative-intent laparoscopic colectomy for colon cancer at K Hospital. Methods: A combined retrospective–prospective descriptive study of 128 patients with colon cancer undergoing curative laparoscopic colectomy at K Hospital from January 2022 to December 2024. Results: Mean age was 59.6 ± 11.8 years; males accounted for 57.0%. Common symptoms were abdominal pain (57.8%), change in bowel habits (45.3%), and gastrointestinal disturbances (35.9%). Tumors were predominantly located in the sigmoid colon (63.3%); preoperative staging was mainly T3 (44.5%) and T4 (30.5%). Mean operative time was 146.4 ± 35.3 minutes, with 75.8% completed in <180 minutes. The mean number of lymph nodes retrieved was 12.6 ± 7.6. Time to first flatus was 4.0 ± 3.7 days; postoperative length of stay was 8.9 ± 4.9 days. Early complications included intraperitoneal bleeding (1.6%), localized anastomotic leak (1.6%), postoperative ileus/obstruction (1.6%), surgical site infection (1.6%), and residual intra-abdominal abscess (0.8%). On univariate analysis, protective ileostomy, postoperative complications, and operative time ≥180 minutes were associated with prolonged hospital stay. Conclusions: Laparoscopic colectomy for colon cancer at K Hospital is safe, with a low complication rate and favorable early recovery metrics.
