Abstract

Objective: Helmet non-invasive ventilation is widely used, however, studies in Vietnam are limited, so the study was conducted to evaluate the results of helmet non-invasive ventilation in patients with acute respiratory failure. Method: A prospective description of 30 patients diagnosed with acute respiratory failure at Bach Mai Hospital from June 2022 to May 2023. Results: In the 30 patients studied with a male/female ratio of 2:1, the average age was 67.7±12.805; 60% of patients were 60-80 years old. The most common cause of acute respiratory failure was pneumonia (23.3%), followed by acute pulmonary edema (30%) and COPD exacerbation (23.3%). The success rate of non-invasive ventilation via head hood was 33.3%, in which the acute pulmonary edema group showed higher success with a longer usage time with the Log-rank test of level 1 with p < 0.05. Conclusion: Helmet non-invasive ventilation showed effectiveness in improving blood oxygen indexes, although the failure rate of this method in the study was relatively high, however, this method proved to be effective in the acute pulmonary edema group, while the effectiveness of the pneumonia and COPD exacerbation group was unclear due to CO2 retention
