Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the dental operating microscope (DOM) on procedural accuracy and working time in a simulated endodontic environment, as well as to compare differences between dental students and postgraduate dentists. Materials and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 participants (25 students and 25 dentists) without prior experience using magnification devices in clinical practice. All participants underwent 6 hours of training before the experiment and performed file insertion tasks on targets arranged along a maxillary arch in a phantom model, under two conditions: unaided vision and DOM. Accuracy was assessed using the Bowers scale (0–4), and completion time was recorded. Results: Procedural accuracy improved significantly from unaided vision to DOM in both dentists (2.41 ± 0.41 vs. 3.50 ± 0.14) and students (2.44 ± 0.39 vs. 3.49 ± 0.11), with p < 0.001. Working time was also significantly prolonged with DOM compared to unaided vision (dentists: 3.23 ± 0.82 min vs. 7.08 ± 1.70 min; students: 3.08 ± 0.89 min vs. 8.10 ± 2.71 min; p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed between the two groups under the same condition. Conclusion: The DOM markedly enhances procedural accuracy but concurrently increases working time. Integrating the DOM into preclinical training has the potential to improve technical skills, support clinical practice, and enhance ergonomics for dental practitioners.
