Abstract

Introduction: Early-onset scoliosis(EOS) can progress rapidly, leading to severe spinal and thoracic deformities that significantly impact patient health. It presents a major challenge for physicians and spine surgeons. Objective: To evaluate the preliminary outcomes of orthotic treatment for early-onset scoliosis in children using serial casting. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study of 18 patients diagnosed with early-onset scoliosis, treated with serial casting at the Spine Surgery Department, Viet Duc University Hospital, from May 2023 to May 2025. Results: Serial casting resulted in an average reduction of 15.2° in Cobb angle and 9.4° in RVAD. During treatment, there was a marked increase in T1–T12 spinal length (mean 34.71mm), chest circumference width (CCW, mean 18.7mm), left-side SAL(mean 15.02mm), and right-side SAL (mean 17.51mm). Annual growth rates were significantly higher in children with lower pre-treatment Cobb angles and RVAD. Conclusion: Serial casting for early-onset scoliosis is not only effective in correcting spinal deformities but also supports thoracic development and spinal growth in affected children
