Abstract

Objective: Describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of children with epilepsy at Thai Binh Pediatric Hospital. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 138 children with epilepsy through direct interviews, extraction of information from medical records and patient charts, combined with clinical observation and review of seizure videos. Results: Epilepsy was more common in boys than in girls (56.5% vs. 43.5%). Generalized-onset seizures were predominant, accounting for 73.2%, followed by focal-onset seizures at 18.8%, and seizures of unknown onset at 8.0%. The mean seizure duration was ≤5 minutes in 97.8% of cases, with 89.9% occurring while awake. Interictal electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities were observed in 87.7% of patients. Neuroimaging revealed lesions in 18.3% of patients on computed tomography (CT) and in 17.2% on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Conclusion: Clinical seizure manifestations and neuroimaging findings in children with epilepsy are heterogeneous. Accurate seizure diagnosis and classification are essential to improve seizure control rates, optimize treatment efficacy, and enhance the quality of life in pediatric patients
