DIAGNOSTIC ACCURACY OF TRANSTHORACIC ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY IN TETRALOGY OF FALLOT

Abstract
Background: Tetralogy of Fallot is one of the most complex and common congenital heart diseases in children. Among diagnostic modalities, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) plays a fundamental role due to its noninvasive nature, ease of use, availability in most healthcare facilities, and particularly its ability to provide detailed visualization of cardiac structures. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of transthoracic echocardiography in tetralogy of Fallot. Materials and methods: A descriptive, retrospective analytic study was conducted on 61 medical records of patients with tetralogy of Fallot at Da Nang Hospital from 2011 to 2022. Results: Ventricular septal defect, right ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and overriding aorta were consistent in number of cases between TTE and surgical/interventional findingsThe location of the ventricular septal defect (including defect size) and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction showed high concordance between preoperative TTE and intraoperative findings. In addition, the evaluation of associated cardiac anomalies demonstrated relatively high sensitivity, specificity, NPV, and accuracy, although PPV was lower. Conclusion: TTE demonstrated high accuracy in diagnosing the characteristic features of tetralogy of Fallot as well as associated anomalies, thereby contributing to effective treatment planning for patients.
