Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the adjunctive analgesic efficacy of Additional Traditional Medicine Treatment (ATMT) in patients with Zoster-Associated Pain at Hanoi Dermatology Hospital, 2023. Method: A controlled intervention study, conducted from June to October 2023, recruited 60 Zoster-Associated Pain patients. The control group used standard treatment (Gabapentin and Lidocaine cream); the intervention group was supplemented with ATMT including electroacupuncture, hydro-acupuncture, acupressure massage and infrared radiation. The results were evaluated by VAS pain scores and pain relief classification after 3 weeks of treatment. Results: The intervention group had a significantly greater reduction in pain than the control group. The mean VAS score decreased from 70.1 to 18.4 in the intervention group (compared to 30.97 in the control group) after 21 days (p<0.001). The proportion of patients with good treatment results (>70% pain relief) was 73.3% in the intervention group, compared to 20% in the control group (p<0.001). Patient satisfaction was also significantly higher (mean score 4.53 vs. 3.80; p<0.001) with 66.7% of intervention patients being very satisfied compared to 16.7% in the control group. There were no serious adverse events; only 6.7% of the acupuncture group had minor bleeding when the needles were removed. Conclusion: Combination of ATMT improved patient pain relief and satisfaction with Zoster-Associated Pain and shingles and is a safe and worthwhile method.
