Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: Describe clinical characteristics and some factors affecting the severity of acne in junior high school students in Hanoi, 2022. Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 1,751 students at four junior high schools. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires and direct clinical examinations by dermatologists. The severity of the disease was classified according to the Karen McKoy scale. Results: The prevalence of acne was 21.7%; females were higher than males (26.2% vs. 17.7%). The severity of acne was 52.1%; moderate 42.1%; mild 5.8%. The skin areas commonly affected were the forehead, nose, and cheeks. Common lesions were blackheads, whiteheads, inflammatory papules, and pustules. In females, puberty increased the risk of acne by 1.9 times compared to the pre-pubertal group (95% CI: 1.20–3.01). No significant association was found between diet and acne. Conclusion: Acne is a common condition in secondary school students. The puberty and female gender are risk factors of acne.
