Abstract

Background: Superficial phlebitis (SP) caused by peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) is a common complication in clinical practice, potentially leading to bloodstream infections, prolonged hospitalization, and increased healthcare costs. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of superficial phlebitis in hospitalized patients with PIVCs at the Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Department, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, and identify associated factors. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 320 patients. The severity of phlebitis was assessed using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) score. Results: The incidence of SP was 30.94%, primarily at VIP1 (26.25%), VIP2 (3.75%), and VIP3 (0.94%), with no cases reaching VIP4 or VIP5. Larger catheter sizes (20G) were associated with a higher risk of phlebitis (p = 0.0017, RR = 3.22). The wrist had a higher risk compared to the elbow (p = 0.004, RR = 0.47). Certain antibiotics and high-molecular-weight solutions increased phlebitis risk (p = 0.322). Conclusions: Close monitoring and appropriate selection of catheter size and insertion site are crucial to reducing the risk of superficial phlebitis
