Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic disease with a high risk of mortality if not well controlled. Effective asthma management requires patients to have knowledge about the disease, adhere to treatment, be well-controlled, and receive timely support from healthcare staff. The Asthma COPD Outpatient Care Unit (ACOCU) plays a significant role in improving the effectiveness of asthma treatment. However, the cost-effectiveness (CE) of ACOCU from the hospital's perspective is a matter to consider. Objective: Analyze the cost-effectiveness of ACOCU from the hospital's perspective. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study based on retrospective data from medical records of asthma patients participating in OAMP at the University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City (UMC HCMC) during the period 2022-2024. Results: The total investment cost for ACOCU during 2022-2024 was 447,997,020 VND, with maintenance costs accounting for a high value of 259,051,821 VND (58.00%). The study on 220 asthma patients during 2022-2024 showed that ACOCU helped reduce 10 emergency cases and 14 inpatient cases. The ICER for avoiding one emergency case was 44,799,702 VND, and the ICER for avoiding one inpatient case was 31,999,787 VND, which is below the payment threshold. Conclusion: ACOCU at UMC HCMC during 2022-2024 achieved cost-effectiveness from the hospital's perspective
