Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and some risk factors for hypoglycemia in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 44 elderly patients with T2DM admitted for hypoglycemia at the Emergency Department, Tan Hung District Medical Center, from January 2023 to January 2024. Results: The most common clinical manifestations of hypoglycemia were sweating (40.9%), tremors (34.1%), and coma (27.3%). Paraclinical findings showed that grade 1 hypoglycemia was the most frequent. The majority of patients had preserved renal function (64.1%), mild anemia (47.7%), and neutrophilic leukocytosis (63.6%). The main risk factor was acute illness with poor oral intake (79.5%), followed by meal omission (15.9%). Conclusion: Hypoglycemia in elderly patients with T2DM is often associated with acute illness and inadequate dietary intake. Early recognition and control of risk factors play an important role in preventing complications, especially at the primary healthcare level.
