Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status before and after surgery and associated factors in patients with gastric cancer at K Hospital in 2023. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on patients diagnosed with gastric cancer and scheduled for gastrectomy at three abdominal surgery departments (Abdominal Surgery 1, Abdominal Surgery 2, and Ngoai Quan Su) of K Hospital, Tan Trieu campus, from March to October 2023. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition based on GLIM criteria was 55.1% before surgery and 77.5% after surgery. Patients with one concomitant chronic disease had a 2.5-fold higher risk of malnutrition compared to those without comorbidities (OR = 2.5; 95% CI: 1.06–6.1). After surgery, patients undergoing partial gastrectomy had a lower risk of malnutrition than those undergoing total gastrectomy (OR = 0.3; 95% CI: 0.1–0.9). Conclusion: Malnutrition according to GLIM criteria was common among gastric cancer patients, with the prevalence increasing after surgery. Surgical approach significantly influenced postoperative nutritional status. Timely nutritional counseling and interventions are essential to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
