Abstract

Objective: Determine the rate of forearm osteoporosis and examine some factors related to forearm osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Subjects and methods: Including 166 postmenopausal women who came to measure bone density at the Functional Exploration Unit - Hanoi Medical University Hospital from June 2024 to December 2024. Results: The average age of the study subjects was 62.76 ± 7.05 years old. The average age of menopause was 49.24 ± 3.59 years old. The average duration of menopause was 13.60 ± 8.05 years. The majority of the study subjects were in the 60 - 69 age group (47.6%). The average bone density at the ultradistal (UD), mid distal (MID), 1/3 distal (1/3D) positions of the non-dominant forearm was 0.313 ± 0.054 g/cm2; 0.442 ± 0.067 g/cm2; 0.543 ± 0.075 g/cm2. The rate of osteoporosis of the non-dominant forearm of the study subjects was 50.6%; the group with reduced bone density accounted for 36.7% and the group with normal bone density accounted for 12.7%. The rate of osteoporosis tended to increase with age, the group of postmenopausal women over 70 years old had the highest rate of osteoporosis at 76.7%. The rate of osteoporosis tended to increase in the group of postmenopausal women with low BMI; the group of BMI < 22 had the highest rate of osteoporosis at 54.9%. The study subjects with ≥ 10 years of menopause had a 3.8 times higher risk of osteoporosis than those with < 10 years of menopause (p < 0.05). Women with 3 or more children had a 2.0 times higher risk of osteoporosis than women with < 3 children (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The rate of osteoporosis of the forearm in postmenopausal women is 50.6%; the older the age, the greater the risk of osteoporosis of the forearm; people with BMI below 22 increase the risk of osteoporosis of the forearm; the number of years of menopause ≥ 10 years increases the risk of osteoporosis of the forearm by 3.8 times; Having 3 or more children, the risk of osteoporosis of the forearm increases by 2.0 times (p < 0.05).
