MULTIDETECTOR COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IMAGING CHARACTERISTICS OF PRIMARY LUNG CANCER
Main Article Content
Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to describe the imaging characteristics of primary lung cancer on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). Object and Method: A descriptive study was conducted on MDCT images of 64 patients diagnosed with primary lung cancer who were treated at K3 Tan Trieu Hospital from January 2025 to May 2025. Results: The majority of patients with primary lung cancer were male (73.4%), while females accounted for 26.6%. Most patients were over 60 years old (64.1%). The lesions were predominantly located in the peripheral lung regions (92.2%) and exhibited heterogeneous contrast enhancement (84.4%). Mediastinal lymph node involvement was observed in 71.9% of cases; 32.8% showed mediastinal invasion, and 7.8% had chest wall invasion. Nodular lesions were the most common morphology (60.9%), while central necrosis was rare (1.6%). According to the TNM staging system, T4 stage was the most frequent (64.1%). There were no cases in stage T1a; stages T1b and T1c accounted for 1.6% and 9.4%, respectively. Metastasis was present in 89.1% of patients. Conclusion: Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) plays a crucial role in the evaluation of primary lung cancer by providing detailed morphological and staging information. In this study, primary lung cancer predominantly affected older male patients, presenting mainly as peripheral nodules with heterogeneous enhancement. A high proportion of cases demonstrated mediastinal lymph node involvement and advanced TNM stage at diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of early detection and comprehensive imaging assessment to guide appropriate treatment planning.
