CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CATARACTS IN EYES WITH SMAILL PUPIL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics of cataracts in eyes with poorly dilated pupils. Subjects and Methods: The study was conducted on 46 eyes from 42 patients diagnosed with cataracts and poorly dilated pupils, treated by phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation at the Ophthalmology Department of the Northwestern Regional General Hospital, Nghe An province, from March 2023 to April 2024. Results: The average age of the study group was 76.4 ± 8.7 years; 14 patients were male (30.4%) and 32 were female (69.6%). The majority of uncorrected preoperative visual acuity was below 20/200 on the Snellen chart, with 11 eyes (23.9%) having visual acuity less than counting fingers at 1 meter. There were three main causes of poorly dilated pupils including pseudoexfoliation syndrome, uveitis, and previous trabeculectomy. The most common was pseudoexfoliation syndrome, accounting for 56.5%, and 23.9% of eyes had undergone trabeculectomy. Conclusion: Cataracts in eyes with poorly dilated pupils are a complex condition with various secondary causes, requiring experienced surgeons and appropriate surgical tools for successful cataract surgery.
