MEDICAL CARE NEEDS OF THE OLDER ADULTS WITH CHRONIC DISEASES

Abstract

Objective: To identify the healthcare needs of older adults with chronic diseases attending outpatient clinics at Le Van Thinh Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, in 2024. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 349 patients aged 60 years and above who visited the outpatient department of Le Van Thinh Hospital from August 2024 to September 2024. Results: Among 349 participants aged 60 and over, the majority were between 60–69 years (61.6%), predominantly female (60.2%). Of these, 82.2% reported a need for healthcare services. The highest demand was for chronic disease management (94.4%). Other needs showed relatively similar proportions, including palliative and end-of-life care (36.7%), home-based care (30.4%), and health consultation via Zalo/telephone (48.3%). Conclusion: Our study highlights a very high demand for healthcare among older adults with chronic diseases, requiring services that comprehensively address physical, mental, and social aspects. These findings underscore the necessity of policies to develop multidisciplinary care models.
