Abstract

Objectives: Describe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of sacral and coccyx myelomeningocele in children. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study, including 32 patients diagnosed and treated for sacral and coccyx myelomeningocele at the Neurological Center - National Children's Hospital, during 1 year (from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021). Results: 32 patients with mean age at admission was 10.4 ± 14.2 months, more boys were infected than girls (the male/female ratio was 1.46/1). MRI of sacral and coccyx showed that the rate of herniated mass in the sacral region was 59.4%, and the coccyx region was 40.6%. The average length of the herniated mass was 2.2 ±1.0cm. The average width of the herniated mass was 2.3±1.4cm. The composition of the herniated mass: 100% contains fluid, 87.5% contains marrow, 46.9% contains fat, 40.6% contains nerve roots and 37.5% contains fibrous. Distribution of myelomeningocele type: 46.9% lipomyelomeningocele; 40.6% myelomeningocele and 12.5% meningocele. Conclusion: Spine MRI is the most accurate imaging method in diagnosing sacral and coccyx myelomeningocele in children: determining the location, size and composition of the herniated mass to help the doctors to have prognosis and the best plans for treatment.
