Abstract

Background: Colonic diverticulum perforation is a severe complication of diverticular disease, often requiring timely surgical intervention. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the early outcomes of surgical treatment for colonic diverticulum perforation at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Methods: A combined retrospective and prospective descriptive study was conducted on patients diagnosed with colonic diverticulum perforation and treated surgically at the hospital between January 2023 and December 2024. Clinical data, surgical approaches, and early postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Results: Fifteen patients were included in the study. The male-to-female ratio was 2:3, with a mean age of 60.5 ± 13.4 years. Intraoperative findings revealed that 73.3% of the perforations were located in the sigmoid colon. The majority of patients (80.0%) underwent colostomy, while 20.0% (3 patients) received right hemicolectomy with primary anastomosis. Conclusion: Perforated colonic diverticula represent a life-threatening complication that necessitates early diagnosis and appropriate surgical management. Individualized treatment based on intraoperative findings remains essential for optimal patient outcomes.
