SPEECH FUNCTION IN PATIENTS AFTER PALATOPLASTY RECEIVED SPEECH THERAPY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the speech function of patients after palatoplasty before and after speech therapy intervention. Subjects and methods: Randomized clinical trial without control group, 25 patients after palatal plastic surgery participated in speech training for 3 months or stopped when they said all the studied sounds correctly at the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital in 2024-2025. Results: 100% of patients did not make the error of the consonant "b", the remaining 5 studied consonants all had significant improvement (became normal or changed to a milder error) with a reliability of > 95%. The rate of patients with a posterior nasal voice before training was 68%, after training was 48%. The average sound production ability before training was 4.88+/- 1.943 (s), after training was 8.48+/- 2.679 (s). Speech intelligibility also improved after training compared to before training with a reliability of > 95%. Conclusion: Post-operative speech therapy is a mandatory intervention and a decisive factor to correct learned compensatory speech errors, allowing patients after palatal surgery to improve their speech function, helping them integrate better into the community.
