Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of school refractive error and to describe the knowledge and practices of eye care and prevention of refractive error among secondary school students in Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province in 2024. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 432 randomly selected students from 4 secondary schools in the province from December 2023 to August 2024. Students were interviewed about their knowledge and practices of eye care, and simultaneously underwent visual acuity examination and refraction measurement using specialized techniques. Results: The prevalence of students with refractive error was 32.4%, of which myopia accounted for 75.0%, mixed refractive error 12.9%, hyperopia 7.9%, and astigmatism 4.2%. The prevalence of refractive error was higher in females (53.6%) than in males (46.4%), higher in urban areas (55.7%) than in rural areas (44.3%), and increased progressively with grade level. 52.1% of students wore glasses with the correct prescription, 25.7% wore glasses with the wrong prescription, and 22.2% were newly diagnosed cases requiring correction. Regarding the prevention of refractive error, 82.4% had correct knowledge and 73.8% had correct practices. Conclusion: It is necessary to strengthen communication at three levels: Students – Parents – Teachers; and to establish close coordination among health services, schools, and families in regular screening, counseling, and guiding practical eye care for the prevention of school-age refractive errors.
