Abstract

Purpose: To describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of infectious keratitis in children at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital. Methods: A descriptive case series was conducted on 34 pediatric patients under 16 years old diagnosed with infectious keratitis at the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, from August 2024 to August 2025. Data on medical history, risk factors, corneal ulcer characteristics and microbiological findings were collected. Microbiological examinations included direct smear, culture, antibiotic susceptibility testing. Results: The mean age of the 34 patients was 7,89 ± 5,29 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1.27:1. Ocular trauma was the most common risk factor (47.06%). Bacteria were the most frequent causative agents (58.82%), followed by mixed infections (26.47%) and viruses (14.71%). Among bacterial isolates, Gram-positive organisms predominated, particularly Staphylococcus coagulase-negative (53.3%). Conclusion: Infectious keratitis in children was mainly caused by bacteria, with Staphylococcus coagulase-negative being the most common pathogen. Ocular trauma was the leading predisposing factor.
