Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of liver abscess managed by ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital from January 2023 to January 2025. Results: A total of 21 patients were included in the study. Results showed that the mean age of patients was 54.43 ± 10.42 years, with males predominating (71.4%). Approximately 38.1% of patients had a history of diabetes mellitus and 28.6% had a history of biliary tract disease. The most common clinical symptoms upon admission were fever (90.5%) and right hypochondrial pain (85.7%). Paraclinical findings indicated significant inflammatory responses, with elevated white blood cell counts (85.7%) and a mean CRP level of 143.57 ± 58.74 mg/L. Imaging results revealed that 85.7% of cases were solitary abscesses, with a mean largest abscess size of 7.51 ± 1.83 cm. The most common location for the abscess was the right hepatic lobe (81.0%). Pus culture was positive in 61.9% of patients, with Klebsiella pneumoniae being the predominant causative agent (69.2% of positive cultures). Regarding treatment outcomes, ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage demonstrated a cure or significant improvement rate of 81.0%. The mean time to fever resolution was 4.71 ± 2.03 days, and the mean drainage tube duration was 28.34 ± 10.94 days. The mean hospital stay was 17.81 ± 6.77 days. The complication rate was 33.3%, primarily consisting of minor complications. The treatment failure rate was 19.0%. Conclusions: The study concludes that ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage is a safe and highly effective method for treating liver abscesses at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, facilitating rapid control of infection and reducing hospital stay for patients.
