POSTOPERATIVE ILEUS AND PROLONGED ILEUS AFTER COLORECTAL RESECTION SURGERY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Postoperative ileus is a complex and common medical problem, especially after surgeries involving the gastrointestinal tract. Historically, since the 1800s, the condition of reduced intestinal motility has been recorded and studied in medical literature. In the United States, postoperative ileus is still a major problem, not only prolonging hospital stay, but also causing a significant economic burden. However, the most serious matter for patients is the discomfort from symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Methods: retrospective and prospective descriptive study, conducted at Nhan dan Gia Dinh hospital, from August 2023 to August 2024. There were 105 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Results: The incidence of postoperative paralytic ileus and prolonged paralytic ileus were 11.4% and 10.5%, respectively. Male sex is a risk factor for paralytic ileus and peritonitis is a risk factor for persistent paralytic ileus. Conclusions: postoperative ileus and prolonged ileus syndrome in patients undergoing colon and rectal resection are still a matter after surgery with a relatively high incidence rate in each group. Through cases of severe complications in the group of prolonged ileus, it is necessary to closely monitor patients to detect early postoperative abnormal symptoms, avoiding confusion with postoperative physiological ileus.
