Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the current practice of physician's feeding prescriptions and the nutritional status of critically ill patients undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Anti-poisoning Department, Vung Tau General Hospital in 2025. Subjects and research methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was utilized. Nutritional status and physicians' daily feeding orders were assessed for ICU patients at Vung Tau Hospital, following the research group's established criteria. Results: Data was collected from 30 ICU patients, total of 346 patient-days of nutritional support data. The male/female ratio was 0,76; the mean age was 72,5 ± 16,3 years. The rate of malnutrition accounted for 83,4%. Tube feeding accounted for 81,2% of the total treatment days. Energy Provision: The mean total energy intake during the treatment course was 1.662 ± 432 kcal/day. Energy derived from intravenous fluids was 403 ± 280 kcal/day. Energy derived from other nutritional supplements was 506 ± 4,7 kcal/day. Conclusion: The assessment of patients' nutritional status and feeding prescriptions provides a preliminary evaluation of the nutritional condition of patients in the ICU and the level of nutritional intervention by intensivist physicians. These findings suggest the need for strategies to enhance professional capacity in nutritional support for ICU patients, thereby improving treatment response and elevating the overall quality of care.
