THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERVENTION ABOUT PREVENTION AND CARING FOR CHILDREN WITH ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTION

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention about prevention and caring for children with acute respiratory infection on mothers having children under 5 years old. Subject and methods: The mixed methods include quantitative and qualitative research. The community intervention study with a control group on 204 mothers and the qualitative research on 24 mothers in rural areas of Nam Dinh (Ninh Binh provice) from January 2021 to December 2023. Results: After the intervention, the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of mothers in the intervention group improved significantly. In the intervention group, the knowledge, attitude and practices of mothers about ARI increased from 15.7% to 85.3%, while in the control group, the rate of satisfactory KAP increased from 15.7% to 21.6%. In-depth interviews with 24 mothers in the control and intervention groups about difficulties in caring for children with ARI at home showed that mothers in the intervention group had significantly reduced difficulties in caring for children compared to before the intervention and compared to the control group. Conclusion: The study indicated that the effectiveness of the intervention program in prevention and caring for children with ARI improved mothers' KAP and reduced difficulties for mothers in caring practices for children with ARI at home
