KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HYPOGLYCEMIA PREVENTION AND RELATED FACTORS IN TYPE II DIABETIC PATIENTS AT THE GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE DEPARTMENT - GIA LAM DISTRICT GENERAL HOSPITAL IN 2025

Abstract
Objectives: To describe the current status of hypoglycemia prevention knowledge among patients with type II diabetes mellitus receiving treatment at the Department of Internal Medicine, and to identify factors associated with hypoglycemia prevention knowledge at Gia Lam District General Hospital in 2025. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 153 randomly selected patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus and receiving treatment at the Department of Internal Medicine, Gia Lam District General Hospital in 2025. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of 10 items assessing hypoglycemia prevention knowledge, originally developed by Esilemen (2020) in a study of 422 diabetic patients. The questionnaire was adapted into Vietnamese with a validated reliability coefficient (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.87). Demographic characteristics and clinical information were also obtained. Results: Overall, 79.7% of patients demonstrated adequate knowledge of hypoglycemia prevention. Regarding demographic factors, “occupation” was significantly associated with hypoglycemia prevention knowledge (p = 0.02; OR = 0.06; 95% CI: 2.0–157.2). Among clinical factors, “family history of diabetes” (OR = 3.3; 95% CI: 1.2–10.0; p = 0.015), “current use of insulin therapy” (OR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.1–6.4; p = 0.032), and “history of hypoglycemia” (OR = 0.2; 95% CI: 0.1–0.5; p < 0.001) were identified as significant factors associated with hypoglycemia prevention knowledge. Conclusions: A high proportion of patients (79.7%) demonstrated adequate knowledge of hypoglycemia prevention. Occupation, family history of diabetes, current diabetes treatment regimen, and history of hypoglycemia were identified as factors associated with hypoglycemia prevention knowledge.
