Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with low back pain due to lumbar spine degeneration treated at the Musculoskeletal Center, Võ Trường Toản University Hospital during the period 2024–2025. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 109 patients who visited and received treatment at the Musculoskeletal Center, Võ Trường Toản University Hospital in 2024–2025, and were diagnosed with low back pain caused by lumbar degenerative disease. Result: The study of 109 patients with lumbar spine degeneration showed a mean age of 61.6 ± 12.1 years (range: 35–84 years), with patients aged ≥60 years accounting for 54.1%. Females predominated, representing 67.9%, compared with 32.1% males. The mean duration of pain was 6.0 ± 4.3 months; most patients experienced symptoms lasting 3 months or longer (78.0%), including 35.8% with pain persisting for more than 6 months, reflecting the chronic nature of the disease. Clinical manifestations were diverse, with localized low back pain observed in 36.7% of patients, pain radiating to the buttock–thigh in 30.2%, and pain radiating to the foot–toes in 33.0%. Imaging findings showed that degeneration was mainly concentrated at the lower lumbar levels, particularly L4–L5 (32.1%) and L5–S1 (27.5%). Common associated lesions included osteophyte formation (28.4%), intervertebral disc space narrowing (25.5%), vertebral compression (17.7%), and spondylolisthesis (17.0%).
