Abstract

Objective: describe imaging characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at E hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, including retrospective and prospective data collection from 27 patients with HCC, at E Hospital from January 2023 to June 2025 and comparison with the pathological results. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0 software. Results: The average age was 65.8 ± 9.8 years, with most patients 50 - 70 years old. The average tumor size was 4.6 ± 2.1 cm, ranging from 1.2 to 8.2 cm. The tumors most commonly located in the right liver lobe (77.8%). 100% hyperintense on T2W, 85.2% hypointense on T1W, 81.5% diffusion restriction, 14.8% tumor have fatty content inside. After contrast injection, at the arterial phase 88.9% of tumors showed  enhancement; at the portal phase 85.2% of tumors showed contrast wash out; at the late phase 88.9% of tumors had contrast wash out, 7.4% malignant portal vein thrombosis. Conclusion: MRI is very valuable in evaluating HCC images with characteristic images: hyperintense on T2W, hypointense on T1W, diffusion restriction. After contrast injection, at the arterial phase tumors showed enhancement; at the portal phase and the late phase tumors showed contrast wash out. Complete analysis and characterization of MRI images is essential to optimize HCC diagnosis
