Abstract

Objectives: To describe the prevalence of primary tooth caries and associated factors among children aged 4–6 years at Phuc Dong Kindergarten, Long Bien District, Hanoi. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 87 children aged 4–6 years. Oral examinations were performed using the ICCMS classification, and oral hygiene was assessed using the Debris Index. Parents were interviewed regarding dietary habits and oral hygiene practices. Results: The prevalence of dental caries was very high (90.8%), with all 6-year-old children affected. Most lesions were located in anterior teeth (86.3%), classified as ICCMS 3 (92.7%) and active caries (88.7%). Buccal/lingual (47.6%) and proximal surfaces (41.1%) were most commonly affected. Snacking habits were reported in 78.2% of children, and 58.6% brushed their teeth ≤1 time per day; poor oral hygiene was observed in 66.7%. Conclusion: Primary tooth caries among preschool children at Phuc Dong Kindergarten was highly prevalent and strongly associated with dietary habits and inadequate oral hygiene. School-based oral health education and parental supervision of toothbrushing are essential to improve oral health outcomes.
