ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND SELF-CARE PRACTICES AMONG PATIENTS AFTER PHACOEMULSIFICATION SURGERY AT FOUR EYE HOSPITALS IN HO CHI MINH CITY UNDER THE SAIGON MEDICAL GROUP
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Cataract remains the leading cause of preventable blindness. Phacoemulsification is the gold-standard treatment, but outcomes depend largely on patients’ postoperative knowledge and self-care practices. Objectives: To determine the proportion of patients with correct knowledge and practice after Phaco surgery, analyze related factors, and evaluate the correlation between knowledge and practice. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at four MSG Eye Hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City (June–August 2025) on 429 patients after one week of surgery. Data were collected using a 20-item structured questionnaire (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.76) and analyzed with SPSS 26.0. Results: 91.4% had good knowledge; 73.2% had good practice. There was a moderate positive correlation between knowledge and practice (ρ = 0.449; p < 0.001). Residence, hospital, and caregiver support were significantly associated. Conclusions: Although patients demonstrated good knowledge, a gap persists between understanding and practice. Standardized education and caregiver involvement are recommended to improve postoperative self-care outcomes.
