ADHERENCE TO METHADONE MAINTENANCE TREATMENT AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG PATIENTS IN HO CHI MINH CITY

Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to determine the rate of methadone treatment adherence and some related factors among patients receiving methadone therapy in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 392 patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment in Ho Chi Minh City (District 3, Tan Binh District, and Binh Chanh District) from January 2024 to December 2024. Results: The mean age of the participants was 43.54 ± 7.43 years (ranging from 29 to 72 years), with the number of male patients being twelve times higher than female patients. The adherence rate to methadone treatment during the maintenance phase was good in 82.91% of patients, moderate in 15.31%, and poor in 1.79%. Factors such as gender, educational level, recent use of heroin and methamphetamine, methadone dosage, and history of treatment interruption were related to treatment adherence. methadone treatment adherence among patients in the maintenance phase was associated with several demographic and behavioral factors. Strengthening counseling and monitoring strategies may help improve treatment adherence in Methadone maintenance programs. Conclusion: The study identified the level of treatment adherence through methadone intake over a 12-month period, providing objective and reliable data regarding adherence among patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment. Findings indicated that 17.11% of patients did not adhere to treatment, and multiple factors were found to influence treatment adherence outcomes.
