Abstract

Orthognathic surgery, a special surgery in facial surgery, could improve patient’s appearance and function significantly. Success in orthognathic surgery need the cooperation of surgeon and orthodontist. Advances in computers and imaging have permitted the adoption of 3-dimensional (3D) virtual planning protocols in orthognathic surgery, which may allow a paradigm shift when the virtual planning can be transferred properly. These allow the surgeon to anticipate, plan and simulate a virtual surgical procedure before undertaking real surgery in the operating theatre. Especially in challenging cases, proper planning with digital technology play an important role. In this way, any potential errors or unforeseen complications in the operating theatre can be eliminated, in addition to reducing surgery time and postoperative trauma for the patient.
