Abstract

Objectives: To describe the current status of knowledge and identify factors related to knowledge of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) among mothers of preterm infants at Nam Dinh Children’s Hospital in 2025. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 42 mothers of preterm infants who were providing Kangaroo Mother Care at the Emergency–Neonatal Department of Nam Dinh Children’s Hospital from June to November 2025. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: The proportion of mothers with adequate knowledge of KMC was 71.4%. Most mothers had good knowledge of the benefits of KMC for infants (thermal regulation, stabilization of respiration and circulation, promotion of breastfeeding) and for mothers (enhanced mother–infant bonding, reduced anxiety, and support of uterine involution). However, knowledge of specific aspects such as continuous KMC day and night and the benefit of reducing postpartum hemorrhage remained limited (73.8% and 69%, respectively). Maternal education level and occupation were significantly associated with KMC knowledge (p < 0.05), whereas age and place of residence showed no statistically significant association (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Maternal knowledge of Kangaroo Mother Care was at a moderate level. Strengthening health education interventions is necessary to further improve mothers’ knowledge, particularly among those with lower educational levels and manual occupations.
