Abstract

Objective: Todescribe the morphological characteristics of atrioventricular septal defect diagnosed prenatally at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital during the period 2020-2025. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted on all pregnant women whose fetuses were diagnosed with atrioventricular septal defect at the Prenatal Screening Center, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from January 2020 to June 2025. The study described characteristics regarding the timing of diagnosis, types of atrioventricular septal defect, and other associated fetal abnormalities. Results: The optimal timing for diagnosing atrioventricular septal defect is in the second trimester of pregnancy. Among 113 diagnosed cases of atrioventricular septal defect, the complete form accounted for 47,78% and 52,22% presented with associated cardiac anomalies. Within the group with associated cardiac anomalies, double outlet right ventricle and/or transposition of the great arteries represented the highest proportion at 54,24%. Trisomy 21 chromosomal abnormality was the most commonly associated finding in the clinical context of atrioventricular septal defect. Conclusion: Atrioventricular septal defect in fetuses is optimally diagnosed during the second trimester of pregnancy, with nearly equivalent rates of the complete and partial forms, commonly associated with trisomy 21 chromosomal abnormality.
