Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the compliance rate with the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) and identify associated factors affecting the healthcare workers adherence at the Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopedics in Ho Chi Minh City. Methods:  An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1 to June 30, 2025. Data were collected using a parallel-methods approach: direct observation of 236 elective surgeries and a self-administered questionnaire survey of 180 healthcare workers involved in surgical teams. Results: The overall compliance rate with the SSC was exceptionally high at 91.1%. Nevertheless, omissions were still noted in steps such as team introductions, allergy history checks, and final surgical method verification. Compliance levels correlated significantly (p < 0.05) with surgical complexity, encompassing surgery classification, surgical duration, and ASA physical status. Among healthcare workers, 93.89% demonstrated good knowledge, and 96.67% exhibited a positive attitude toward the checklist. However, major systemic barriers to implementation included time pressure (67.22%), lack of team coordination (41.11%), and lack of monitoring (48.33%). Conclusion: The SSC compliance rate at the studied hospital is highly favorable and correlates proportionally with the complexity of the surgical interventions. To overcome systemic barriers, continuous training, improved team communication, and more flexible monitoring protocols are recommended.
