EPIDEMIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF PATIENTS WITH TINEA FACIEI AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL OF DERMATOLOGY AND VENEREOLOGY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Tinea faciei is a superficial fungal infection of the epidermis caused by filamentous fungi belonging to the dermatophyte group, clinically manifesting on the glabrous skin of the face. Lesions typically present as annular plaques with well-demarcated borders, accompanied by scaling, vesicles, or pustules concentrated at the active margin. A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 105 patients diagnosed with tinea faciei from September 2024 to August 2025 at the National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology, with the aim of describing epidemiological characteristics and several associated factors. The results showed that males accounted for 53.3% and females for 46.7% of cases. The mean age was 25.5 ± 18.7 years (range 0.5 - 81 years). Disease onset occurred predominantly in summer (80.0%), followed by winter (14.2%). A personal history of dermatophytosis was reported in 39.0% of patients, while 12.4% had a family history of fungal skin infection. Additionally, 9.5% of patients lived in damp housing conditions, and 42.0% reported keeping pets (dogs or cats). Prior to presentation, the majority of patients had used topical medications (82.9%), 12.3% had taken systemic therapy, and 4.8% had received no treatment.
