Main Article Content
Abstract
Over the past few decades, along with the socio-economic development of the country, health care activities to improve the health of the community have also received attention, including oral care activities for the community. In the field of dentistry, many oral care and disease prevention programs for the community have been implemented, and oral care products such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwashes, etc., have become popular and easily accessible. These changes may affect the periodontal health of the community. Through studying the trends in periodontal health of adult populations in the South Central Coast region, Viet Nam over the decades from 1999 to 2019, we conclude that: • In 1999, the rate of adults with gingivitis or periodontitis was high, above 97%. The average number with periodontal pockets in the sextant increased with age. • The proportion of people with three or more healthy sextants is low and does not exceed 8.7%. A significant proportion of adults do not brush their teeth. • In 2019, the proportion of people with bleeding gums ranged from 35.5% to 49.7%, increasing with age. The proportion of people with bleeding gums gradually decreased with age. The proportion of people without periodontal pockets ranged from 88.2% to 970% depending on age group. The proportion of people with periodontal pockets decreased with age. The proportion of people with three or more sextants without periodontal pockets ranged from 66.7% to 100%, and this proportion gradually decreased with age. • A comparison of the periodontal health of the adult community here after two decades shows a significant improvement in the proportion of people with healthy periodontal tissue, which increased. The average number of sextants with periodontal pockets decreased.
