Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To assess gingival status and knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding oral health care among medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 240 fifth-year medical students at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Data were collected on knowledge and attitudes toward periodontal disease, oral health care practices, and gingival status. Results: The proportion of students with good knowledge was 33.8%, good practice was 32.1%, while positive attitudes accounted for 55.4%. Students who had studied the Odonto-Stomatology (Dentistry) course had significantly higher rates of good and fair knowledge compared with those who had not (p < 0.001), and also demonstrated more positive attitudes (p < 0.01). Oral health care practices were mainly at a moderate level; although the proportion of good practice was higher in the group that studied Odonto-Stomatology, the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.01). Regarding oral health status, moderate gingivitis was the most prevalent condition (52.1%), with no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Studying Odonto-Stomatology is associated with improved knowledge and attitudes toward oral health care among medical students; however, practices and gingival health remain limited, indicating the need to strengthen preventive education and practical skills training in the curriculum.
