Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of piezotome-assisted surgery in the removal of impacted mandibular third molars. Subjects: Patients undergoing extraction of impacted mandibular third molars at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital from February 2025 to April 2025. Methods: A controlled clinical trial. Results: The two groups were comparable in terms of tooth morphology, bone space width, eruption position, root shape, and number of roots, with no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). Postoperatively, the piezotome group exhibited significantly lower pain levels than the non-piezotome group on postoperative days 1 and 3, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.001). Swelling and limitation of mouth opening tended to be lower in the piezotome group at all follow-up time points; however, these differences did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). By postoperative day 7, marked clinical improvement was observed in both groups. Conclusion: Piezotome-assisted surgery is an effective adjunct in reducing early postoperative pain following the extraction of impacted mandibular third molars.
