Abstract

Objective: To investigate the clinical and audiological characteristics of children under 6 years of age with sensorineural hearing loss at the Ho Chi Minh City Ear Nose Throat Hospital. Methods: A case series study was conducted on 48 children under 6 years of age diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss at the Department of Audiology, Ho Chi Minh City Ear Nose Throat Hospital, from April 2022 to October 2022. Results: The age group from 2 to < 3 years accounted for the largest proportion (29.2%); The primary reason for clinical presentation was unresponsiveness to sound (79.17%). Regarding perinatal history, 39.6% of the children had a low birth weight, and 16.7% were born prematurely. Auditory Brainstem Response testing revealed an absence of wave V in 68.85% of left ears and 79.17% of right ears. The average hearing thresholds measured by Auditory Steady-State Response were 109.29 dB for the left ear and 105.84 dB for the right ear. The proportion of profound hearing loss (>90 dB) was 83.33% in the left ear and 85.42% in the right ear. Conclusion: Sensorineural hearing loss in children under 6 years of age was predominantly detected late and and at a profound degree. Early detection and diagnosis, along with the investigation of risk factors, are essential for proposing early intervention strategies and health education.
