Abstract

Background: Appropriate medication use in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) helps improve treatment outcomes. Objectives: To investigate the medication use in ACS patients within the first 24 hours of admission and on discharge. Materials and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on medical records of ACS inpatients at Department of Cardiology, Trung Vuong hospital (between January 1st, 2024 and December 31st, 2024). Data collected included patients’ demographics, treatment characteristics and medication use patterns. The medication use was evaluated using the ACS treatment guidelines of the Ministry of Health (2020) and the European Society of Cardiology (2023). Results: A total of 143 medical records of ACS patients were included (median age 66.0; male 65%). Hypertension was predominant comorbidity (80.4%). The proportion of patients underwent percutaneous coronary intervention was 42.7%. Four medication groups, including aspirin, P2Y12i, statin, and ACEi/ARB, were commonly prescribed. On admission, the appropriateness rates of main medications were 61.7-90.9%. On discharge, these rates were 75.2-96.5%. The median hospital stay was 9 (8-12) days. Conclusions: The medication use in ACS patients was relatively consistent with current treatment guidelines. Clinical pharmacy intervention may improve the rationality of medication use.
