TREATMENT STATUS AND INHALERS TECHNIQUE OF ASTHMATIC PATIENTS AT GIA DINH PEOPLE’S HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objectives: to investigate the treatment of asthma and inhaler technique of asthmatic patients.


Subjects and methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on asthmatic patients at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital from March 2021 to May 2021. Background and treatment characteristics of patients were collected through prescription and interviews. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20 software.


Results: research from 180 patients showed that 68.9% of patients only used inhaled drugs, all patients were prescribed ICS; SMART therapy was preferred (75.6%) over SABA (25.6%); DPI is preferred over pMDI (73.9% DPI and 26.1% MDI). The majority of patients had well-controlled asthma (70%). The turbuhaler (DPI) has a simpler technique and the patients performed more correct inhalation techniques than the MDI. The education level of patients were associated (statistically significant) with the accuracy of technique in using the inhalers. The more accurate the technique of using the inhalers, the better the asthma control.


Conclusion: SMART therapy is widely used and has demonstrated a relatively high rate of achieving total asthma control. The correct usage rate for pMDIs is lower than that for DPIs and is associated with asthma control. A low level of education may be the primary factor leading to the incorrect use of inhaler devices.
