Abstract

Background: Inguinal lymphadenectomy in penile cancer often leads to impaired quality of life due to complications and psychological impact. VEIL is expected to reduce morbidity while maintaining oncological outcomes.

Aims: To assess quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) and survival (DFS) after penectomy combined with VEIL at Binh Dan Hospital.

Materials and Methods: Retrospective case series of 32 patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma underwent penectomy plus bilateral VEIL from September 2023 to March 2025. QoL was evaluated using EORTC QLQ-C30 at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. Survival was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier.

Results: Mean age was 54.1 years (range 37-74). There were no major postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ IIIb). The EORTC QLQ-C30 global health status score improved markedly from 78 points preoperatively to 92 points at 12 months. The 1-year overall survival rate was 100%. The 1-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 84.4%. Early inguinal recurrence occurred in 15.6% of cases.

Conclusions: Penectomy combined with VEIL provides excellent quality of life improvement and favorable survival outcomes.
