Abstract

Problem Statement: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women and is closely associated with infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV screening is an effective strategy for early detection of precancerous lesions and reduction of mortality. However, access to screening services in rural areas remains limited. This study aimed to describe the current status of knowledge, screening practices, and barriers to HPV screening among rural women in selected communes/wards of Ninh Binh province in 2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 420 women aged 25–60 years living in selected communes and wards of Ninh Binh province. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that included general information, knowledge of HPV, HPV screening practices, and barriers to HPV screening. Barriers were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale (1–5). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods.

Results: The proportion of women who had ever undergone HPV testing was 21.7%. The main barriers to HPV screening included lack of information about the test (62.4%), high cost of screening (58.1%), embarrassment related to gynecological examination (55.9%), and difficulties in accessing healthcare services (47.6%).

Conclusions: HPV screening coverage among rural women in Ninh Binh province remains low due to multiple barriers related to knowledge, economic constraints, and psychosocial factors. Strengthening health education and expanding HPV screening models appropriate for rural settings are necessary to improve screening uptake.
