APPLIED ANATOMY OF THE TRIANGULAR FIBROCARTILAGE COMPLEX: A CADAVERIC STUDY

Abstract
Objectives: To describe detailed anatomical characteristics, determine structural dimensions, and identify the prevalence of morphological variants of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) to provide data for applied surgery in the Vietnamese population.
Methods: A descriptive case series was conducted on 30 fresh cadaveric wrist specimens at the Department of Anatomy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. Dissection was performed under magnification to expose all superficial and deep components of the TFCC. Length, width, and thickness parameters were measured using Vernier and Castroviejo calipers with an accuracy of 0.1 mm.
Results: All specimens exhibited a full complement of TFCC components, including controversial structures such as the ulnocapitate and ulnar collateral ligaments. The articular disc had a mean length of 10.1±1.9 mm and a mean width of 10.7±1 mm, and central disc perforation was observed in 50% of cases, primarily associated with chronic degenerative lesions. The narrow-open type of meniscus homologue was most prevalent (86.7%). The footprint of the deep limb of the distal radioulnar ligament at the ulnar fovea measured 8.1 ± 0.2 mm in length and 2.9 ± 0.2 mm in width.
Conclusions: The study confirmed the presence of all TFCC components in 100% of cases, particularly the constancy of the ulnocapitate and ulnar collateral ligaments. The dimensions of the deep limb footprint of the distal radioulnar ligament serve as a critical reference for selecting tunnel and graft sizes in distal radioulnar ligament reconstruction for Vietnamese patients.
