Abstract

Objective: Survey of sleep disorders and identify associated factors among older adults attending Clinic A of Thanh Nhan Hospital in 2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 104 outpatients aged ≥60 years from March to October 2025. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Results: The prevalence of sleep disorders was 58.7%. Most patients slept fewer than 5 hours per night (75.4%). Mild, moderate, and severe insomnia accounted for 55.7%, 37.7%, and 6.6%, respectively. Common symptoms included difficulty falling asleep (73.8%), non-restorative sleep (73.8%), and early morning awakening (70.5%). Significant associated factors included living alone (p<0.05), smoking (p<0.05), and musculoskeletal pain (p<0.05). No significant associations were found with age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, COPD, electronic device use before bedtime, or mild depressive symptoms.

Conclusion: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent among older outpatients, particularly in individuals living alone, smokers, and those with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Routine screening and early implementation of behavioral and psychosocial interventions are recommended to improve sleep quality and overall health in this population.
