ANATOMICAL STUDY OF THE MEDIAL CIRCUMFLEX FEMORAL ARTERY IN VIETNAMESE CADAVERS

Abstract

Research Objective: To describe the anatomical characteristics of the medial circumflex femoral artery (MCFA) in adult Vietnamese individuals.


Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 38 MCFAs from 19 cadavers (10 male, 9 female).


Results: The MCFA originated from the deep femoral artery (DFA) in 26 samples (68%) and from the superficial femoral artery (SFA) in 12 samples (32%). When arising from the DFA, the MCFA originated from the posterior aspect in 21 samples (81%) and from the medial aspect in 5 samples (26%). When arising from the SFA, the MCFA originated from the medial aspect in 9 samples (75%) and from the posterior aspect in 3 samples (25%). The average diameter of the MCFA was 3.54 ± 0.95 mm. The MCFA gave off 1, 2, 3, or 4 perforating branches with frequencies and proportions of 2 samples (5%), 10 samples (26%), 18 samples (47%), and 8 samples (22%), respectively. The average distance from the MCFA origin to the inguinal ligament was 42.29 ± 12.94 mm.


Conclusion: The MCFA originates more frequently from the DFA than from the SFA. The average diameter of the MCFA is 3.54 ± 0.95 mm. The MCFA may give off 1 to 4 perforating branches. The average distance from the MCFA origin to the inguinal ligament is 42.29 ± 12.94 mm.
