Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and evaluate the surgical management of congenital eyelid colobomas.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional case series was conducted on patients diagnosed with congenital eyelid coloboma who underwent eyelid reconstruction surgery at the Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery Department, Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology, from January 2024 to December 2025. Clinical characteristics, surgical techniques, and postoperative outcomes were collected and analyzed.

Results: A total of 5 patients were included, comprising 3 males and 2 females. The mean age at the time of surgery was 31.2 months. Upper eyelid defects were predominant, accounting for 4 cases, while lower eyelid involvement was observed in 1 case. The defect size ranged from 20% to 80% of the eyelid length. Direct closure was performed in 4 cases, and a pedicled rotational flap technique was applied in 1 case. Postoperatively, all patients achieved functional and aesthetic outcomes ranging from fair (2/5) to good (3/5), with no significant complications observed during a mean follow-up period of 3 months.

Conclusion: Early surgical reconstruction in congenital eyelid coloboma effectively restores eyelid anatomy and provides adequate corneal protection. The choice of surgical technique primarily depends on the size of the eyelid defect.
