ASSOCIATION OF ALCOHOL USE PATTERNS WITH PSYCHOTIC SYMPTOMS AND LABORATORY PARAMETERS IN PATIENTS WITH ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL DELIRIUM

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the association between the duration of alcohol consumption, average alcohol intake, and alcohol cessation time with the frequency of hallucinations and delusions, as well as hematological and biochemical indices in patients with alcohol withdrawal delirium.


Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with case analysis was conducted on 34 patients meeting the diagnostic criteria for alcohol withdrawal state with delirium (F10.4) treated at the Department of Psychiatry, Military Hospital 103, Vietnam Military Medical University.


Results: There were no statistically significant differences in the duration of alcohol consumption and the amount of alcohol intake between patient groups with continuous versus intermittent frequency of hallucinations and delusions. The cessation time in the group with continuous hallucinations (78,2 ± 17,6 hours) and the group with continuous delusions (89,5 ± 10,5 hours) was significantly higher than those in the group with intermittent hallucinations (37,1 ± 8,0 hours) and the group with intermittent delusions 47,4 ± 15,4 hours). Regarding laboratory indices, the duration of alcohol consumption was positively correlated with elevated GOT and GGT levels. Average alcohol intake was associated with an increase in total bilirubin. Meanwhile, alcohol cessation time showed no significant relationship with hematological and biochemical blood indices.


Conclusion: Prolonged alcohol cessation time is associated with a continuous frequency of hallucinations and delusions. The duration of alcohol consumption is positively correlated with the increase of GOT and GGT indices.
